Families provide daily care, training, and socialization, while the farm covers breeding-related expenses such as health testing, veterinary care during breeding cycles, and whelping support. Once the dog has completed its breeding contribution, full ownership transfers to the Guardian Home family.

What the Program Requires

Guardian Home families must meet specific criteria to ensure the dog receives proper care and lives in an environment suited to a breeding-quality Labrador. Requirements include a securely fenced yard, no long work hours that leave the dog alone for extended periods, and a willingness to coordinate with the farm during breeding cycles and whelping. Families must also live within a reasonable distance from Caddo Mills to allow for veterinary visits, health testing, and breeding coordination without excessive travel stress on the dog.

After placement, the dog lives full-time with the Guardian Home family and participates in normal household activities, training, and exercise routines. When the dog reaches breeding age and passes all required health clearances, the farm coordinates breeding cycles, which may involve the dog staying at the farm for a few days during estrus or whelping. Once the dog has completed its breeding contribution—typically two to four litters—full ownership transfers to the family, and the dog remains in the home permanently with no further obligations.
