How the Guardian Partnership Works
Guardian families are selected based on their proximity to Caddo Mills, their experience with Labradors, and their ability to provide a stable, active home environment. The farm evaluates each applicant's living situation, yard space, and daily schedule to confirm the placement aligns with the dog's needs and the breeding program's requirements. Once approved, the Guardian Family receives a quality breeding dog from Hargrove Heaven Farm Labradors, taking on normal day-to-day care while agreeing to make the dog available for breeding, health testing, and program-related appointments.
When breeding time arrives, we coordinate all necessary arrangements with the Guardian Family. For female dogs, they return to our farm when it is time to have and raise their puppies, where we handle all veterinary care, delivery, and nursing. Once her puppies are fully weaned, she returns home to her Guardian Family to resume normal daily life. Male dogs may occasionally be needed at the farm for scheduled breeding appointments, but otherwise continue their normal, uninterrupted life with their family.
Guardian contracts specify the number of litters required, reproductive health parameters, and the transition of full ownership once breeding obligations are complete. Once a dog has completed their breeding career (typically retiring between 5 and 7 years of age), they are officially retired from our program. At that point, full AKC registration and legal ownership transfer directly to the Guardian Family so the dog remains permanently with them for the rest of its life.
